Hitachi:  a new stereo camera: Compatible with a wide angle of view 、distant detection

December 25, 2019

Hitachi Automotive Systems:

We have developed a “stereo camera that has both a wide angle of view and far-field detection”.

Even without a millimeter-wave radar, this stereo camera alone can be used to reduce collision damage at an intersection (AEB: Automatic Emergency Braking).

Automotive safety rating NCAP:

Many traffic accidents occur at intersections.

“Technical needs to enhance safe driving at intersections” are increasing.

From 2020, AEB (collision damage mitigation brake) at intersections will be introduced in the NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) for safety performance evaluation of automobiles.

Sensing technology: Recognizes a wide horizontal angle of view

To avoid collisions when turning left or right at an intersection, “recognition of a wide horizontal angle of view for the sensor function” is indispensable.

With the stereo camera developed this time,

Wide-angle sensing of left and right of stereo camera.
The detection range is expanded by shifting the image range detected by the camera left and right.
The angle of view is three times wider than before.

The new stereo camera can detect and measure pedestrians and bicycles with high accuracy.

It realizes “safety support at intersections with a minimum configuration of a single stereo camera“.
