Underwater optical wireless communication device

Shimadzu Corporation will launch the MC100 underwater optical wireless communication device on February 27.

This device enables underwater wireless communication at a communication speed of 95 megabps or more over a distance of 10 meters or more.

“MC100”: Field of application

Provided for unmanned submersibles (underwater drones) used for undersea exploration and pipeline maintenance and management.

We realize stable underwater communication.

Conventional technology:

Conventionally, underwater communication has been dominated by “wired” by cable or “sound wave” with low communication speed.

The wired method restricts underwater drone activities by cable.
The sound wave method has a communication speed limit of several tens of kilobps.
Each company is researching underwater optical radio, but LED light source products are the mainstream.

Our technology:

Shimadzu Corporation used a semiconductor laser with excellent directivity and response speed as the source.

Developed the underwater optical wireless communication device “MC100” capable of “high speed communication with low power consumption”.

“Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology” (JAMSTEC)

Shimadzu Corporation and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) worked on the development of this equipment.

This is the result of research and development * using the Security Technology Research Promotion System of the Defense Agency.

Underwater optical wireless communication technology:

This is a ‘dual-use technology’ that can be used for both defense and consumer use.

We will continue to contribute to marine development by providing technology to build a communication environment that can be called “underwater optical Wi-Fi.”
