Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshiaki Nakazato) has decided to enter the recovery business of chromite, which is a raw material of stainless steel.

Chromite (Note 1) is smelted to intermediate product ferrochrome and widely used as a raw material for stainless steel and special steel, and  uses THPAL nickel · cobalt mixed sulfide (Note 2) From the manufacturing process.

By efficiently recovering not only nickel and cobalt but also byproducts such as scandium and chromite, we will enhance the cost competitiveness of our HPAL technology (High Pressure Acid Leach). We will further enhance our presence in the world’s nickel business by providing new materials for the stainless industry, the major supplier of nickel products.
