Panama (ACP): Japan, 2nd in Panama Canal transit cargo volume: China’s downgrade

Panama Canal Agency (ACP):

Secretary Jorge Kihanan announced the Panama Canal and transit volume in the first half of 2019 on June 13.

Japan surpasses China in the volume of freight traffic by country of the Panama Canal by country, and is second.

ACP: 2018 results

The first place in 2018 is the United States, followed by China Mexico, Chile, Japan and Peru.

In the first half of 2019, the United States, Japan, China, Chile, Mexico, Korea in order.

US-China trade friction: possible factors

One of the factors that lowered China’s rankings was a decrease in cargo volume due to the US-China trade friction.

In particular, exports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US to China decreased.
