WIPO: Asia is a hub for intellectual property: World Intellectual Property Index 2019

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO):

On October 16, the annual report “World Intellectual Property Indicators 2019” was announced.

Reported that the total number of patents, trademarks, designs and other applications in the world reached a record high in 2018.

The number of patent applications has been increasing since 2004, except for 2009.

Each country / region: Number of applications

The number of applications in 2018 was 3,330,000, up 5.2% from the previous year.

China has the largest number at 1,540,000 (up 11.6%), accepting 46.4% of worldwide patent applications.

Number of patent applications in China; since 2011, the largest in the world,
US patent applications: 2nd in the US, with 600,000 applications in 2018.
Number of patent applications in Japan: 3rd in the world, down 3% from the previous year to 310,000.

Patents, trademarks and designs in 2018: Number of applications

“The number of applications accepted or recorded by IP offices based in Asia” accounted for more than two-thirds of the world’s total.
