USA: New car sales in 2020: 6 Japanese companies, down 17% year-on-year

-Although recovery is expected this year, semiconductor shortage is a hindrance-

6 Japanese companies:

New US car sales in 2020:

It was about 5.34 million units, down 17% from the previous year.

From September 2020, there was a recovery trend compared to the previous year’s results.

However, it could not make up for the “decline in sales due to the new coronavirus in the first half of 2020.”

2021 US Automotive Market:

It is expected to recover about 16 million units, up 10% from the previous year.

On the other hand, the production of cars is decreasing one after another due to the shortage of semiconductors, and there is concern that the impact will spread.

2020 Sales by manufacturer:

Toyota, down 11.3% to 2.11 million units,
Honda, down 16.3% to 1.35 million units,
Nissan’s sales decreased by 33.2% to 900,000 units.
Toyota increased its market share due to the effects of new SUV HVs.

It seems that Nissan’s sales declined due to the high sales ratio for fleets, where demand for rental cars dropped sharply.

Mazda achieved a 0.2% increase to 280,000 units, the only increase in sales other than Tesla.

The new car effect of the SUV “CX-30” and the strengthening of the sales network contributed.

Research firm MarkLines:

New car sales in the US market as a whole in 2020 decreased by 14.6% to 14.57 million units.

It fell below 17 million units, which had exceeded 17 million units for the fifth consecutive year until 2019.

By vehicle type:

Trucks, including SUVs, which account for 80% of the total, decreased by 9.7% to 11.06 million units.

Passenger cars decreased by 27.0% to 3.52 million units.
