TSMC: Joint venture with Sony, Toyota and Mitsubishi? : Taiwan media coverage
-Are you building a fab in Japan? –
Multiple media in Taiwan:
As information from TSMC suppliers,
There are rumors that “TSMC will build a semiconductor front-end factory in Japan as a joint venture with Sony, Toyota, and Mitsubishi Electric.”
According to the report, TSMC and three Japanese companies will invest NT $ 400 billion in total investment.
A monthly production of 50,000 fabs using the 20-40nm process will be built in Japan.
The construction site is not necessarily Kumamoto.
Sony:
‘Image sensor and peripheral logic chip’ manufacturing consignment,
Toyota:
‘In-vehicle semiconductor’ manufacturing consignment,
Mitsubishi Electric:
It is said that it will outsource the manufacture of’power semiconductors’.
It also accepts manufacturing consignments from companies other than the three companies.
TSMC’s expansion into Japan:
When TSMC expands into China,
For fear of leaking TSMC’s semiconductor manufacturing technology
It does not adopt the “joint venture format proposed by the Chinese side”.
TSMC has built a factory in China with a sole investment.
It is unlikely that it will be a joint venture in Japan.
TSMC will not comment on industry or market rumors as before.

Taiwan’s TSMC tight-lipped about Japan plant for Sony, Toyota, Mitsubishi
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC)
said Friday (June 18) it would not comment on media reports that it was working with Sony, Toyota, and Mitsubishi Electric to build a factory in Japan.
the Liberty Times
If the project rumored to be centered on the city of Kumamoto in south Japan did come about,
it would form a break with tradition for the Taiwan company as it rarely forms joint ventures, the Liberty Times reported.
According to reports, TSMC would hold a 50 percent stake in the NT$400 billion (US$14.34 billion) project.
However, responding to reporters’ questions about the Japan deal,
TSMC said it would not comment.
a research center
Instead, the world’s largest contract chipmaker emphasized another project in Japan for a research center focusing on 3D integrated circuits.
The company said the project would be completed by the end of the year, CNA reported.
TSMC said it had chosen the city of Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture
for the center and was already recruiting staff for the subsidiary it would own 100 percent.
