NEDO’s Next-Generation Vessels: Start of Ammonia Co-firing Tests! Thursday June 1st, 2023By Tokio X'press engine, ammonia, Energy, precision, shipping [National Research and Development Agency New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization] NEDO’s Next-Generation Vessels: Start of Ammonia Co-firing Tests! – Equipped with an actual IHI engine – NEDO’s next-generation ship development: We are developing an ammonia-fueled engine for ships. The world’s first marine 4-stroke engine will be installed on an actual ship. Co-firing test with ammonia fuel co-firing rate of 80% has started. Marine ammonia-fueled engines: IHI Power Systems is in charge of development. Marine 4-stroke engines are used in “main propulsion engines for small and medium-sized ships and auxiliary power generation engines for large ships.” In the future, we will improve the co-firing ratio, reduce greenhouse gases, and confirm the quality and safety when installed on an actual ship. Conceptual drawing of A-Tug (CG)This actual engine is scheduled to be installed as the main engine for propulsion of A-Tug: Ammonia-fueled Tugboat. A-Tug will enter commercial service after completion in 2024. We will show the path to carbon neutrality in 2050 and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry. Co-firing test results: This time, using an actual A-Tug engine, we have started a “mixed combustion test with an ammonia mixed combustion rate of 80%”. Verification tests to date: Operation tests were conducted in combination with peripheral equipment such as post-treatment equipment for exhaust gas generated during combustion. We succeeded in achieving “N2O, which has 300 times the greenhouse effect of CO2” and “reducing the emission of unburned ammonia to almost zero.” We confirmed the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the demonstration test of fuel ammonia. Future development schedule: In this project, we will develop technologies for “hydrogen/ammonia fuel engines for ships” and “measures against methane slip on LNG-fueled ships.” https://news.kcsf.co.jp/new/20230516-2.html Top | NEDO Green Innovation Fund https://green-innovation.nedo.go.jp/ More from tokioX : IHI’s Ammonia Power Generation: Gas Turbine Test Started!
