NEC: Successful CA with O-RAN specification / 5G base station: Maximum downlink 4.2 Gbps

NEC: Successful CA with O-RAN specification / 5G base station: Maximum downlink 4.2 Gbps

September 30, 2020

Organization “O-RAN Alliance”:

NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu, NEC:

The opening of wireless access networks for 5G is progressing rapidly.

Using the Open RAN specification,
5G base station equipment between different vendors,
For carrier aggregation (CA) in the 5G frequency band,
Announced that it was successful.

3 companies announced:

This is the “world’s first” attempt.

Fujitsu and NEC 5G base station equipment / master station,

3.7GHz band / slave station,
For 4.5GHz band, slave station,
Build an interconnected system (multi-vendor RAN) and
Succeeded in “carrier aggregation of 5G frequencies in the 3.7GHz band and 4.5GHz band”.

Carrier Aggregation (CA):

When LTE carriers from different base stations are bundled together and combined with transmission / reception dual connectivity,

Achieves high-speed data communication of up to 4.2 Gbps (Gigabit / sec) on the downlink.

NTT DoCoMo and NEC:

On the same day, it also announced that it has expanded the lineup of 5G base stations that use the O-RAN Alliance specifications.

O-RAN Alliance compliant 5G master station provided by NEC and Samsung Electronics,

With 5G slave stations of other vendors already used in NTT DoCoMo’s commercial network,

It is said that the interconnection was also successful.
