NEC: Concrete utility pole crack detection: Fiber optic sensing

(September 1, 2020)

NEC:

A verification test was conducted with the CRIEPI to detect cracks on concrete utility poles.

Domestic utility pole deterioration: cracking

Currently, domestic power companies have more than 22 million utility poles.

These aging conditions,
Grasp the damage situation at the time of disaster,
Efficiency is an issue.
NEC is CRIEPI:

Telemetry of vibration waveform of optical fiber,
Utilize AI technology to analyze vibration data
It was confirmed that the presence or absence of cracks can be determined remotely.

The presence or absence of cracks is an important criterion when determining the deterioration state of utility poles.

Overview of demonstration experiment

With NEC’s optical fiber sensing technology,

Transmit light pulse from one end of optical fiber,
Detects changes in the phase of weak backscattered light,
Measures the change in the state of vibration that occurs on the path.

In advance, identify the pole installation point,
The vibration waveform obtained from the nuclear point
Obtained continuously as natural vibration of telephone poles.
NEC’s AI technology:

Using RAPID machine learning (Note 2),
The relationship between the vibration waveform and the presence or absence of cracks on the utility pole
Build a learning model as a set.
From these, the presence or absence of cracks on the utility pole can be determined remotely.

Demonstration results:

This demonstration was carried out using telephone poles on the premises of the Akagi Test Center of the CRIEPI.

As a result, we succeeded in remotely determining cracked utility poles with an accuracy of about 75%.
