Keio University: iPS cells treat corneal diseases: vesicular keratopathy

Keio University research:

A group of associate professors Shigeto Harumura of Keio University.

“Cells made from iPS cells” are transplanted into “patients with a disease in which the cornea on the surface of the eye becomes cloudy”.

This is the world’s first clinical study, aiming to restore eyesight.

“Blistering keraunopathy”:

As the number of cells in the cornea decreases, the cornea becomes cloudy and the eyesight deteriorates.

For patients with “bullous keratopathy”
Eye cells made from other people’s iPS cells,
Approximately 800,000 transplanted,
Aim to restore eyesight.

current problem:

Corneal transplantation is the only radical treatment for bullous keratopathy.

We will apply to the government for implementation, and if approved, we will transplant it in the future.

Number of target patients:

According to the research group, 10,000 people are waiting for a transplant in Japan.

However, only 2000 people receive a corneal transplant for this disease each year.

Obviously, there are not enough proposals.
