JST: Construction of Next Generation Synchrotron Radiation Facility at Tohoku Univ. Of Sendai City – Application Expectations in a Broad Field such as Drug Discovery
July 4, 2018 News
As a representative synchrotron radiation facility in the country now, “Spring 8” (Hyogo prefecture) of RIKEN has been established and has produced many results.
Spring 8 uses synchrotron radiation called “hard x-ray”, whereas the next generation synchrotron radiation facility uses “soft x-rays” that shine brighter but lower in energy than hard x-rays.
Hard X-rays can measure heavy elements with good sensitivity and are good at analyzing the inside of substances.
Soft X-rays can measure light elements with good sensitivity and are good at analyzing the surface of materials.
The next-generation synchrotron radiation facility is expected to exert its power by discovering new drugs from its features, developing new catalysts, polymer materials, magnetic materials, and the like.
