UNCLOS & CLCS - The Right Arctic

UNCLOS rules:

The continental shelf is defined as 200 nautical miles (approximately 370 km) from the baseline of the territorial sea of the governing state.

It is positioned as an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) that has priority rights such as exploration, development, and extraction of resources.

Recognition of ‘extended continental shelf’:

The scope of the extended continental shelf must be topographically and geologically connected to the land.

If this is approved, it will become an “extended continental shelf.”

Coastal countries can be set beyond 200 nautical miles.

This is subject to approval by the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.

The Japanese government has been coordinating with the United States, which shares its waters, for the past 10 years.

Across the Pacific Ocean, in the United States, parallel surveys were being conducted to establish an extended continental shelf.
