Here are more layoffs tied to the economic impact of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Los Angeles
Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told the Board of Supervisors on May 12, 2020, that the quarantine order will “with all certainty” be in effect through the next two and a half months – essentially until August 2020. According to LA county, only 240,000 residents of 10,000,000 have been tested for the coronavirus. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was interviewed on the T.V. show Good Morning America on May 13, 2020 and said, “LA will never be completely open until we have a cure.”
Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is extending the stay-at-home quarantine order through June 8, 2020.
Conde Nast
U.S. magazine behemoth Conde Nast is letting go around 100 U.S. employees and furloughing 100 more. Conde Nast oversees magazines such as Vogue, The New Yorker, Wired, GQ, and Vanity Fair, and online-only publications like Glamour, tech blog Ars Technica, and Pitchfork.
VaynerMedia
New York-based VaynerMedia plans to have layoffs.
Cars.com
Chicago-based Cars.com, an online car-buying company, terminated 170 employees in May 2020.
Glassdoor
San Francisco-based Glassdoor, an employer review website, terminated 300 employees, around 30% of its staff.
Sweet Tomatoes
The Sweet Tomatoes buffet chain is permanently closing its 97 restaurants. The soup-and-salad bar buffet chain has a strong presence in Southwest Florida.
