South Korean agencies to develop UAV engines
South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the country’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE)
signed an agreement on 30 January to collaborate on developing turbofan engines for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
In a statement, MOTIE said that
the memorandum of understanding is intended to boost indigenous capability in UAV engine technologies that are restricted under international export control mechanisms, specifically the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).
MOTIE
said, “Therefore, [South Korea] has to develop our own technologies to strengthen our defence capabilities.”
Through the collaborative project, MOTIE said
the two agencies are aiming to develop initial UAV engine prototypes by the mid-2020s.
