South Korea deploys indigenously developed coastal radar

South Korea

has operationalised the first example of an indigenously developed coastal surveillance radar,

the country’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on 30 October.

The system, which has been referred to by DAPA as the Maritime Surveillance Radar-II,

was developed in collaboration with South Korean defence systems company, LIG Nex 1.

The project began in 2015, and is valued at about KRW31.6 billion (USD27 million).

According to an image that accompanied the DAPA release,

the system

features a rotating parabolic antenna reflector with a feedhorn support boom setup.

The system is housed in a radome and mounted atop a personnel-accessible pedestal.

The programme’s first unit

was operationalised in September, and the South Korean government is expected to procure about 10 examples of the system in phases by 2025.

The new units

will replace a constellation of ageing costal surveillance radars that are probably located along the Northern Limit Line (NLL).
