United States: Import value of rare earths to China: 2018, 20.7% increase from the previous year

US Trade Representative (USTR):

On May 13, the fourth sanction will be levied up to 25% additional tariffs on 3,805 items (equivalent to $ 300 billion).

However, rare earths that are import-dependent on China are excluded (see the article on May 14, 2019).

Meanwhile, China may use rare earths as a countermeasure against the United States (see the article on June 14, 2019).

US Department of Commerce:

June 5th, in order to secure rare earth supply, announced a report to accelerate development and approval in Japan (see article on 20 June 2019)

US Rare Earth: Import Trends in 2018

It investigated according to import item (HTS code 280530, 284610, 284690).

In 2018, imports to China were $ 91.87 million, an increase of 20.7% over the previous year.
In 2018, EU imports fell 5.5% to $ 28.12 million.
China’s share of total imports is 56.4%

US rare earths: 2018 imported items

100% of rare earth carbonates other than lanthanum (HTS2846.9.0805),
97.9% of rare earth oxides (HTS 2849.
97.9% of rare earth carbonate containing lanthanum (HTS 2846.9.08070),
Almost all items of lantern are imported from China.

US rare earths: 2018 import increase

Inorganic and organic compounds containing yttrium or scandium (HTS 2846.9.80090): $ 60.85 million, up 20.2% over last year
Other rare earth oxides (HTS 2846.900.040): 2.9 times to $ 4.42 million.

Recent developments: Q1 2019

Imports of rare earths to China in the first quarter of 2019 decreased 4.3% to $ 19.10 million

2019 first quarter rare earth imports to the EU increased 3.0% year-on-year to $ 5.66 million

Import value of rare earth oxides including lanthanum, which is highly dependent on imports to China, increased 2.0 times to $ 1.31 million.

For inorganic and organic compounds containing yttrium or scandium, $ 10.22 million, down 21.4% from China.

Meanwhile, it is $ 4.13 million, up 6.7% from 28 EU countries.
