RIKEN: Ultra-thin organic solar cells

-New power generation layer design and thermal stabilization technology by post-annealing-

RIKEN has succeeded in developing an ultra-thin organic solar cell [1] that achieves both high energy conversion efficiency and long-term storage stability.

Research results: field of use

Wearable electronics,
Sensor for soft robot [2],
Actuators, etc.
It can be applied as a lightweight and flexible power supply that can supply power stably.

This development:

This time, “Bulk heterojunction [3] structural element with high energy exchange efficiency / thermal stability” was newly manufactured and the power generation layer was improved.

Furthermore, to improve the interface and charge transport efficiency between the power generation layer and the hole transport layer, this device was post-annealed [4] (150 ° C).

As a result, performance is improved

13% high energy conversion efficiency,
Degradation of 5% or less after 3,000 hours of storage in air,
Long-term storage stability
An ultra-thin organic solar cell (thickness: 3 micrometers) has been realized.

This means that the energy conversion efficiency has been improved by about 1.2 times and the long-term storage stability has been improved by 15 times compared to the highest ever.
