Toray: Developing a new UF membrane – 6 times the permeability of nanopores

February 25, 2019

Toray:

developed a new UF membrane that combines fine separability and high water permeability.

UF (Ultrafiltration) membranes are used in water treatment in various fields.

What is UF membrane made of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride):

This product effectively separates minute substances and increases water permeability.

Water supply,

Sewage / industrial wastewater treatment

Food and beverage,

Pharmaceutical / medical applications

Energy saving and cost reduction can be expected by water treatment in a wide range of fields.

Points of this technology:

1. Ultimate pursuit of UF membrane structure by calculation chemistry

In-situ observation of phase separation process in large synchrotron radiation facility “SPring-8”

discovered that both layers can be realized by lowering the phase separation speed inside the UF membrane.

2. Innovative hollow fiber membrane process technology (Figure 1)

Realized fine separability and high water permeability

Control the phase separation speed and growth rate inside the membrane surface layer and membrane by making use of original hollow fiber membrane process technology
