Hitachi: Automatic culture success of cells for regenerative medicine-Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) sheet

World’s First Success in Automated Culture:

Hitachi and RIKEN joint research team:

We aim to automate culture of regenerative medicine cells.

This time, for the first time in the world, we succeeded in “automatic culture of a sheet-like tissue (RPE cell sheet, Fig. 2) of retinal pigment epithelium derived from human iPS cells” using a completely closed system small automatic culture device (Fig. 1). .

In addition, we have demonstrated that the RPE cell sheet produced is “the same level of quality as the technique culture by skilled technicians” by analysis using various markers.

This is a result that opens up the way to stable supply of medical cells by automatic culture, and greatly contributes to the spread and development of regenerative medicine.
