Japan NTT: Succeeded in the world’s fastest data transfer – Demonstration of 600 Gbps transmission

Outline of demonstration experiment

In November 2018, we constructed “an optical transmission network environment capable of transmitting 600 Gbps at one wavelength” between NII (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) and Chiba and Kashiwa City, and conducted three kinds of experiments.

1. Experiment 1

Fiber optic networks conducted transmission experiments between NII (Hitsuhashi) and Kashiwa-shi.

NTT East: Building a network that can transfer data at 600 Gbps.

Commercial environment: About 102 km fiber · Demonstration of 600 Gbps transmission is world first.

2. Experiment 2

Experimental result: With “587 Gbps and 590 Gbps” data transfer rate, “successful transfer of large capacity data of 40 TByte” succeeded.

40 TByte: For a typical 25 GByte Blu Ray Disc, it is equivalent to 1,600.

Transfer this large capacity data in about 9 minutes.

3. Experiment 3

We also installed transmission equipment in Kashiwa City and constructed two transmission paths with different transmission distances (Fig. 4).

We assumed “failure of transmission line” and also conducted “route / switching experiment”.

In accordance with the route switching, the wavelength was changed, and “speed change from 600 Gbps to 400 Gbps” was confirmed and the communication line was reestablished.
