China Tesla: October · China sales volume decreased by 70% – the impact of tariff raises

4th December 2018

According to the announcement by the Chinese automobile industry group “Passenger Car Market Relief Union (CPCA),” the US Electric Vehicle (EV) maker Tesla’s sales in China during the third quarter (July – September) It decreased by 37.0% to 3,169 units.

In addition, the most recent October marked a sharp decline of 70.0% from the same month of the previous year, in contrast to the 75.0% increase in the entire China EV market.

There are several causes of sluggish sales.

It is greatly influenced by China raising tariffs imposed on US-made cars from July to 15% from 40%.

Tesla is developing a production base in Shanghai, but all the domestic sales at the moment are imported from the United States.

In order to reduce the price difference with the US, Tesla announced that it will discount the selling price up to 25.9% from November 22 (see table).
