Raytheon awarded US Navy contracts for additional SPY-6 radars
The US Navy (USN)
awarded Raytheon a USN250 million contract to build two additional AN/SPY-6(V) radar shipsets to be installed on Flight III DDG 51-class guided-missile destroyers, the company confirmed on 20 December.
The AN/SPY-6(V)
is meant to provide the USN greater operational flexibility to defend against ballistic and cruise missiles,
as well as advanced surface and air threats, noted Scott Spence, senior director of Naval Radar Systems at Raytheon.
The USN
is counting on the new radar suites to provide enhanced ballistic missile defence (BMD),
which is taking on greater priority as US adversaries and competitors bolster their missile forces.
