Hitachi Zosen: Landing / offshore wind power generation: Suction bucket foundation

~ Conduct a real sea area test in FY2021 ~

March 18, 2020

Hitachi Zosen / Toyo Construction

We work on construction technology demonstration of suction bucket foundation in offshore wind power generation facilities.

Hitachi Zosen / Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. will reduce the cost of land-based offshore wind power generation facilities (reduce capital costs by 20%).

This project will be implemented with the support of NEDO “Development of low-cost construction technology for offshore wind power generation”.

Suction bucket basics:

This method is proven in Europe as a foundation for offshore wind power generation facilities and has been applied to breakwaters in Japan.

In this demonstration, we will develop the basic form and construction technology applicable to large wind turbines, and prepare for the spread of wind turbines of 10 MW class or more.

Demonstration: Main contents

①FY2019 ・ 2020

Toyo Construction will conduct an earth tank test on a 1/10 scale model / suction bucket foundation.

The behavior of structures and the ground / Construction / removal workability was confirmed.
A centrifugal force field test will be conducted at Kyoto University.
Analyze the numerical analysis results of both tests.
Began designing and manufacturing the suction bucket foundation for the next year’s actual sea test.

②FY2021

Conduct penetration and pull-out tests in the actual sea area to evaluate the coupled behavior between the structure and the ground.

③FY2022

Verification of large-scale wind turbines is also performed, and technology certification is obtained by a public organization.

Suction bucket basics: main features

No large-scale construction machinery is required because the water is drained by the pump and penetrates into the ground
By removing water in the reverse order of penetration, all removal is possible using the equipment at the time of installation
No loud noises and vibrations are generated during the intrusion and removal work.
