VodafoneZiggo and NEC start trialing Open RAN technology

VodafoneZiggo and NEC Europe Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of NEC Corporation, in partnership with Altiostar,
have jointly announced the first successful voice call made on an open virtual Radio Access Network (Open RAN) on VodafoneZiggo’s network in the Netherlands.
Open RAN technology
is the foundation of next-generation wireless infrastructure driven by innovation and open standards.
Today’s announcement
demonstrates VodafoneZiggo’s strong commitment to sustaining its technological leadership, by bringing in such technological advances.
During the course of this trial, VodafoneZiggo and NEC
intend to integrate solutions of leading Open RAN technology vendors, such as Altiostar and various other radio vendors,
including NEC’s own 5G radio products, using commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware from third parties,
enabling VodafoneZiggo to transform its network to a software-based one suiting multiple deployment scenarios.

VodafoneZiggo en NEC hebben 15 oktober 2020 een eerste mobiele gesprek gevoerd via een open virtueel VodafoneZiggo radionetwerk in Nederland.
Deze Open RAN-technologie (Radio Access Network) voor mobiele netwerken is de nieuwe trend in telecommunicatie architectuur.
Hiermee is het mogelijk om functies die nu worden verzorgd door hardware, volledig om te zetten naar software.
Dit maakt het netwerk flexibeler met meer automatisering, waardoor sneller nieuwe diensten voor klanten zijn te ontwikkelen.
