University of Hyogo: Large-capacity encryption technology indispensable for realizing 6G:

-The world’s first successful cryptographic technology development-

6G encryption technology:

Next-generation mobile communication system “6G” expected to be put into practical use around 2030

High-speed, large-capacity encryption technology is indispensable for the realization of 6G.

A group of the University of Hyogo Graduate School
For the development of 6G high-speed, large-capacity encryption technology
It was the first success in the world.

Cryptography with security and speed:

safety:
Even a quantum computer, which far exceeds the supercomputer, takes 20 trillion years to break the code.

High speed:
It has high speed that can encrypt data of 100 gigabytes or more per second.

Japan’s 5G core technology:

Currently, 5G communication is expanding the communication area in the world.

The Japanese lag behind in 5G core technology.
With 6G’s core technology, Japan is trying to make a comeback.

Associate Professor Fifty:

“Cryptography for 6G that achieves both security and high speed” has not yet been developed.

In the future, he says, “I would like to undergo third-party verification and aim for an international standard.”

5G encryption technology:

In 5G, as a key to encrypt data,
Use “128-bit” information.
128 numbers of 1 or 0 are lined up.

The combination pattern is 2 to the 128th power.

5G cryptanalysis at “Supercomputer Fugaku”:

It takes 24 trillion years to decrypt 5G at “Supercomputer Fugaku, which can calculate 44 K times per second”. It was

5G cryptanalysis with “quantum computer”

On the other hand, in the case of a quantum computer, there is a risk that the 5G code will be broken in 40 seconds.

Guarantees 6G safety and high speed:

The security of 6G communication,
To secure the same level as the present
A “256-bit” key was sought.

Further,

The communication speed of 6G is
Over 100 gigabytes per second,
It is expected to be 10 times or more that of 5G.

Encryption also needs to be fast.

Associate Professor Igarashi:

We have developed an “encryption method that divides data into eight parts and processes them in parallel”.

Fast encryption at 138 GB / s:

We succeeded in “encrypting at a speed of 138GB / s with the current personal computer performance”.

Supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan:

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications supports 6G high-speed, large-capacity encryption technology.

Cryptography is the core technology that supports the security of communications.

This achievement is worthy of evaluation in leading the world’s 6G communication technology.

Rocca: Fastest encryption scheme for Beyond 5G/6G

November 9, 2021

KDDI Research, Inc.
University of Hyogo

KDDI Research, Inc. and the research team of Associate Professor Takanori Isobe at the University of Hyogo

have developed a new symmetric cipher “Rocca”.

Rocca is designed
to meet the performance and security requirements for the Beyond 5G/6G era.

Rocca is the fastest authenticated encryption with associated data (AEAD) algorithm and a 256-bit key and achieves throughput of 138Gbps(1).

Background

One of the aims of research into Beyond 5G/6G is to achieve a throughput exceeding 100Gpbs.

In order to realise services capable of fully utilising the high throughput,

including high resolution video transmission, an encryption algorithm also needs to achieve at least the same performance.

The requirements of a symmetric key encryption algorithm in Beyond 5G/6G era are:

・Throughput of over 100Gbps
・Support of 256-bit key in order to be resilient against a quantum computer attack
・Integration of encryption and message authentication
Rocca satisfies all three requirements.

Results

Rocca employs instructions (including AES-NI(2))

which can be performed efficiently on PCs and smartphones as main components and places them in parallel in order to realise fast encryption/decryption.

Moreover,
other processes have been incorporated to ensure adequate security while not compromising speed.

In comparison to the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES),

Rocca is more than 100 times faster than AES without AES-NI and 4.5 times faster with AES-NI.

Rocca is the first 256-bit authenticated encryption scheme which achieves speeds exceeding 100Gbps (138Gbps) and is the fastest software implementation.
