Toshiba: Film-type perovskite solar cell: Conversion efficiency 15.1%

-Achieving the world’s highest energy conversion efficiency of 15.1%-

September 10, 2021

Toshiba:

It is lightweight, can be bent, and can be installed in various places.

We will move forward toward the practical application of next-generation solar cells.

Overview:

Developed a new film formation method.

Achieves the world’s highest energy conversion efficiency of 15.1%
Developed film-type perovskite solar cell
June 2018
We have developed the world’s largest size (703cm2, * 5) module as a perovskite solar cell.

September 2021
This time, we have maintained the world’s largest size and succeeded in “accelerating the film formation process and improving conversion efficiency”.

Film type perovskite
Solar cell

Lightweight and thin, it can be bent.

Previously it could not be installed,
Weak roofs and
Office building windows, etc.
It can be installed in various places.

Details of this achievement

We will make a presentation at the 82nd JSAP Autumn Meeting, which will be held online from September 10, 2021.

Japan firms eye flexible future for solar power

Two of Japan’s biggest electronics companies

are working on what they hope will be the future of clean energy, and both are betting on a substance called perovskite.

Toshiba

is using perovskite to make a film that’s just a millimeter thick and can generate solar power.

The company says it’s light and flexible enough to install on office windows and low load-bearing roofs.

Todori Kenji, a senior expert at Toshiba’s Corporate Research & Development Center says,

You can install it pretty much anywhere, and it won’t spoil the view. We plan to keep developing it to make it more durable.

Toshiba says the film is roughly as efficient at converting sunlight as a conventional solar panel, and hopes to have it on the market by the end of 2025.

Researchers at rival firm Panasonic

are also looking at perovskite film. They envisage using the firm’s printing technology to coat construction materials in it.
