TVNZ: Suspected carcinogenic pesticides detected in NZ honey: Herbicide glyphosate residue

-Japan is considering import ban-

NZ honey:

Herbicides suspected of being carcinogenic have been detected twice in imported honey from New Zealand since last fall.

Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan:

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has informed the New Zealand government that it may consider measures, including an import ban, if the situation does not improve.

Results of MPI Survey:

In July last year, New Zealand’s state-owned television station TVNZ reported on the results of a survey by the country’s primary industry (MPI).

Many honey products, including Manuka honey, were found to have a residual herbicide, glyphosate.

The information was transmitted to Japan, and importers and dealers were chased by inquiries from customers, causing a fuss.

Residual herbicide glyphosate:

Japan’s Ministry of Health has stepped up quarantine inspections for New Zealand honey.

0.02ppm glyphosate was detected in Manuka honey that arrived in late October.

Ordered the importer to dispose or reship all.

Mandatory glyphosate test:

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, which emphasized that it was detected twice in a short period of time, announced on January 8 that it would implement an inspection order for imported foods based on the Food Sanitation Law.

Importers are required to inspect all lots of New Zealand honey and processed glyphosate.

Japan warns it will block NZ honey shipments if glyphosate limits breached

20 January 2021

Japan is warning

it will stop importing New Zealand honey if it continues to find the weed killer glyphosate during border testing.

New Zealand’s global honey exports

totalled $490 million last year, with almost $68m of that sent to Japan.

Japan is now testing all honey from New Zealand at the border, after it detected glyphosate for the second time through random testing.

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare

has told the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) that if 5 percent of imported honey exceeds its glyphosate limit, it will stop the honey coming into Japan.

MPI food risk assessment manager
at New Zealand Food Safety,

Andrew Pearson, said as a response, glyphosate testing would be required before any New Zealand honey was exported to Japan.

Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association

While there were no food safety concerns, Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association spokesperson John Rawcliffe was worried about the impact it could have on the industry’s reputation.

“We are noted as being clean, green and 100 percent pure, our environment is what makes this honey sell and so we need to be very aware, conscious of it and actually deliver a product that meets those expectations,” Rawcliffe said.
