Toray, hydrogen purification of polymer separation membrane – Energy saving

Toray has succeeded in creating a high molecular separating membrane that can selectively and highly permeate hydrogen from a mixed gas containing hydrogen.

In the future, we will advance scaling up and implementation of society to realize hydrogen society.

Currently, as utilization of new energy, expansion of hydrogen use.

Production volume of hydrogen rapidly increased to 300 million tons in 2030.

A membrane separation method that can expect energy saving and highly efficient hydrogen refining has attracted attention.

Separation of gas by general membrane method must be performed under high temperature and high pressure.

In order to demonstrate excellent separation characteristics under severe separation conditions, ‘heat resistance and pressure resistance of the porous base material composing the separation membrane’ are necessary.

In addition, ‘precise pore size control’ of the separation function layer is important in order to separate hydrogen from the feed gas with high permeability and high selectivity.

In the current hydrogen-purified polymer separation membrane, there was a problem in ‘compatibility of heat resistance / pressure resistance and hydrogen permeability / selectivity in separating process’.
