Furukawa Electric succeeded laser welding of 50 copper foils for lithium ion batteries – Miniaturization of batteries and increase in capacity

Furukawa Electric:

Succeeded laser welding of copper foil for lithium ion battery.

We achieved 50 penetration welds for the first time with laser bonding.

This technology greatly contributes to the miniaturization and large capacity of lithium ion batteries.

In order to increase the capacity of the lithium ion battery,

It is necessary to increase the number of copper foil used for the negative electrode and to increase the surface area.

However, the copper foil is extremely thin, and welding defects are likely to occur when many copper foils are overlapped and welded,

Stable welding technology has been demanded.

We plan to exhibit this technology in Photonix 2018 (another window) to be held from 5th to 7th December 2018.
