Greece is being prodded by the European Union’s Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) to pay a fine of more than €200 million for allowing a tax fraud operation at the port of Piraeus.
It was allegedly perpetrated by Chinese criminals.
The gangs imported bargain-basement priced goods through the country’s largest port, which was targeted because it is “the gateway to Europe.”
They were able to avoid paying import duties and value-added tax on footwear and textiles.
OLAF put out a statement on the fine, “OLAF can confirm that it has concluded an investigation concerning the fraudulent import of undervalued textiles and shoes into Greece in the period 1 January 2015, to 31 May 2018.”
Piraeus is a part of China’s Belt and Road initiative.
COSCO Shipping (CICOY), the largest container shipping company in the world, purchased the port in 2016 with a controlling stake.
