Chinese market: Uniqlo / Japanese car sales trends: Compared to the Korean market

-Toyota, the highest performance ever in China-

Japanese cars and Uniqlo in Korea:

It looks like Japanese cars and Uniqlo have definitely been hit in the Korean market.

If so, did the Japanese car maker and the UNIQLO headquarters also suffer a big blow?

I don’t see that.

The biggest reason is that Japanese cars and UNIQLO are selling well in China.

Japanese car sales in China:

Toyota (including Lexus):
Sales in China in September were 179,400 units, up 25.3% from the same month last year.

It has exceeded the previous year’s results for 6 consecutive months.
September is the highest monthly record.
Cumulative sales from January to September this year also reached a record high of 1,262,400 units, up 6.9% year-on-year.

Toyota: The annual sales target in China this year is 1.76 million units, an increase of 8.6% from the previous year.
Honda: September sales increased 22.3% year-on-year to 168,900 units. ..
Nissan: September sales were 141,600 units, 5.1% higher than the same month last year.
Korean car sales in China:

Toyota sells four times as many in China as Hyundai Motor.

The number of Japanese car makers sold in China in September was 490,000.

Comparing in the same period, it means that “Japanese cars sold 336 times as many as the number of cars sold in South Korea (1458 units)”.

Hyundai Motors in China:

Hyundai Motor’s sales in China peaked at 1.14 million units in 2016 and declined.

2019: The number has dropped to 650,000 a year.
2020: We are facing a crisis of less than 500,000 units a year.
Cumulative sales from January to August this year were 262,621 units, down 31.4% from the same period of the previous year.

Let’s touch UNIQLO.

Number of UNIQLO stores in China:

As of the end of August, UNIQLO had 767 stores in China, surpassing the number of directly managed stores in Japan (764) for the first time.

At the end of September, the number increased to 782.
Over the past five years, we have opened 400 new stores in China alone.
Currently, the number of stores in China has reached five times that of South Korea.

UNIQLO sales in China:

Currently out of UNIQLO sales

Sales ratio in Japan is 30%, and sales in Greater China (Hong Kong / Taiwan) is 20%.
The average growth rate in Greater China over the past three years has been 15%, five times that of Japan (3%).
China is expected to outperform Japan in sales three to four years later.
UNIQLO Market Capitalization:

UNIQLO has a market capitalization of 7,388 billion yen (as of 14th).

The outbreak of the new virus has increased by 30% compared to the end of February before it went into full swing.

Thanks to the strong Chinese market despite the boycotts of Japanese products in South Korea.

Currently, UNIQLO’s market capitalization exceeds SK Hynix (62,972.2 billion won = 5,830 billion yen, as of 14th), which is the second largest Korean stock.

Compare with ZARA and H & M:

ZARA
The market capitalization of Inditex, the leader in the fashion industry (owned by brands such as ZARA), was 75 billion euros (9.32 trillion yen), a decrease of 10% from the end of February.

H & M
Third place H & M had a market capitalization of SEK 270 billion (¥ 3.23 trillion), down 10%.

How about that? :

It is true that the boycotts of Japanese products have hit Japanese companies in South Korea, but it does not seem to have had a major impact on the Japanese headquarters.
