JAXA: Hitachi Zosen all-solid-state batteries in space! :Planetary rover

JAXA and Hitachi Zosen:

On February 2, it announced that it had signed a “demonstration experiment / joint research contract for the practical application of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries in space.”

ISS Japan’s Experiment Module “Kibo”:

Install it on the outboard experiment platform of the ISS Japan’s Experiment Module “Kibo” and check if it works.

All-solid-state lithium-ion battery:

Uses an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery in outer space.

In the future, it will be installed on planetary exploration vehicles (rover) such as the Moon and Mars and observation equipment.

Demonstration experiment on ISS:

It will be installed on the ISS after the fall of 2021, and a demonstration experiment will be conducted for half a year from the end of 2021.

Before the launch, we will develop the equipment necessary for space demonstration of the battery and conduct verification experiments.

This will lead to smaller and lighter equipment used in the space environment and lower power consumption.

JAXA | Demonstration experiment for practical use of all-solid-state lithium-ion battery in space

February 2, 2021

Hitachi Zosen
JAXA

We have signed a joint research agreement on “the world’s first demonstration experiment for the practical application of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries in space.”

Conventionally installed inside the satellite:

Conventionally, lithium-ion batteries used in space have been

The point of using liquid and
Because the operating temperature range is narrow,
Vacuum and large temperature difference,
Difficult to use in harsh space environments.

Therefore, it is installed inside the satellite and used while controlling the temperature.

This time, used in space environment:

Vacuum state,
Even in harsh high and low temperature environments
Can be used in the space environment,
We have been developing prototypes with the aim of using all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries in space.

Evaluation in the actual space environment:

Both sides will conduct a demonstration experiment in orbit to evaluate and verify the prototype battery in the actual space environment.

Used in rover and observation equipment:

By using an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery, temperature control is not required.

Contributes to smaller and lighter equipment and lower power consumption in the space environment.

Furthermore, it can be expected to be used in the lunar and Mars spacecraft, which is a harsher temperature environment, and rover and observation equipment, which are mobility that operates on the lunar surface.
