Japan: The strongest submarine’Soryu’: Air-independent propulsion (AIP)

Submarine “Soryu”:

The first ship of the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s conventional powered submarine “Soryu” type was commissioned in 2009.

Since then, ships of the same type have been built and commissioned one after another.

Air-Independent Propulsion:

“Soryu” adopts the diesel-sterling electric system.

It is a submarine equipped with an engine unit of a type called an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system.

What is an AIP system:

It is a method that does not require the large amount of air required to operate a diesel engine.

Technology that allows you to work while diving for a long time without snorkeling.

“Soryu” type submarine:

Normal power diesel engine power generation system and
It also has a Stirling engine power generation system.
It is a submarine that realizes long-term diving activities.

Nuclear submarine:

Nuclear submarines are noisy.

The active nuclear submarine engine cannot be stopped.

The noise reduction technology cannot eliminate the noise in the engine section.

Normal power submarine:

It is possible to completely stop the engine.
It is also possible to completely eliminate the noise of the engine section.
The crew of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force submarine operates silently during covert diving.

11th ship “Oryu”:

The 11th ship “Oryu”, which is scheduled to be completed in 2020, adopted a lithium-ion storage battery for its AIP system.

A higher-spec stealth submarine is about to be commissioned.
