Hyundai Motor: Kona 25,000 recalled in South Korea: LG battery
“Replace with a new battery”
Hyundai Motor:
The “Recall Plan for 25,000 Kona EVs” will be submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport by the 19th.
Recall target:
In addition to the first recall (25,000 units)
For vehicles manufactured and sold after April last year
There is a possibility that it will increase to 33,000 units.
The 25,000 Kona EVs are equipped with “batteries produced by LG Chem at its Nanjing plant in China.”
Hyundai Motor and LG Chem will discuss the “battery replacement cost of 1 trillion won (about 95 billion yen)” in the future.

The recall decision is based on the judgment that “the trust of consumers will be lost due to a series of EV fire accidents.”

An automobile industry official said, “This recall is not a software update, but a method of securing and replacing additional batteries, which will take more than a year.”

Hyundai Motor Co. Expected to Replace Batteries for 3 Electric Vehicle Models
Hyundai Motor Co. and
the Ministry of Land, Transport (MILT)are expected to announce a recall of the three Hyundai electric vehicle models equipped with batteries from LG Energy Solution
– the Kona Electic, the IONIQ Electric and the Elec City bus – on Feb. 19,
following an announcement of the results of an investigation into the cause of the Kona EV fires.
Hyundai Motor
has decided to replace the battery cells of its three electric vehicle models.
Initially, the company considered replacing battery cells for Kona EVs only.
But as fires broke out in other electric vehicle models powered by batteries from LG Energy Solution, the carmaker has decided to expand the recall.
About 21,000 units of the IONIQ were sold in Korea alone.
The carmaker
has decided to include its electric bus in the recall as an Elec City bus caught fire on Feb. 15. It sold 263 units of the electric bus.
Including the Kona EVs, the total number of vehicles subject to the recall will top 100,000.
