British Museum to show rediscovered Hokusai works
The British Museum
will hold an exhibition of about 100 recently rediscovered drawings by ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai.
The museum
gave a media preview on Tuesday of 103 drawings it acquired last year.The works are available to see online.
The postcard-sized drawings
are sketches for woodblock prints.The subjects
are wide ranging, from animals to plants and other natural phenomena to landscapes.They were produced between the 1820s and 1840s for an illustrated book that was never published.
Curator Alfred Haft：
says Hokusai has “a blend of humor and a sense of adventure.”
He also says “these drawings are not part of standard encyclopedias, so this is Hokusai imagining the world.”
He adds that although they are not in color, “the direct skill of the artist’s hand is amazing in itself to see.”
The exhibition titled “Hokusai:
The Great Picture Book of Everything” will run from Thursday to January 30, 2022.
