Australia’s next frigate: Japan’s ‘Mogami’ selected as candidate

through a hybrid, offshore then onshore build strategy, transitioning to the consolidated Henderson, shipyard in Western Australia.

Four platforms have been identified：

By the independent, analysis as exemplars to form the basis of a selection process for this new general, purpose frigate:,

１． Meko A-200,

MEKO was developed by Blohm+Voss, its warship business is now a subsidiary of the giant ThyssenKrupp group. Atlas Elektronik, headquartered in Bremen, was briefly owned by BAE Systems but its naval business was sold to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in 2005.

２．Mogami 30FFM,

The warships incorporate numerous signature reduction measures to enhance stealth. The frigates carry a wide range of sensors, including an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar in an integrated mast, electro-optic and infrared detection systems, towed-array and variable-depth sonars for submarine hunting, and a hull-mounted sonar for mine-hunting.

The high degree of automation enables a reduced crew size of only 90 personnel. Propulsion consists of a combined diesel and gas system incorporating one gas turbine and two diesels. Two shafts with controllable pitch propellers provide a top speed of more than 30 knots.

３．Daegu class FFX Batch II and III,

November 23. In South Korea, the eighth and final Daegu-class frigate powered by Rolls-Royce’s MT30 gas turbine is being delivered to the Republic of Korea, ROK, Navy.

The ship’s handover marks an important milestone in the culmination of the ten-year FFX Batch II/Daegu-class frigate programme.

But, as Lee Skelton, Naval Programme Manager for Korea at Rolls-Royce remarks, “It’s no time to put our feet up” as the development of FFX Batch III/Ulsan-class frigate is already well underway.

４．Navantia ALFA3000, Hunter class frigates and destroyers

According to Navantia it is an Australianised version of the Alpha 3000-design built for Saudi-Arabia as the Avante-class, and as such promoted as a proven design. As armament and defensive equipment suite the ship features 16 configurable VLS-cells, four quadruple antiship-missile-launchers in slanted racks, a main gun in the 57 mm-category, two triple torpedo launchers, a lighter 30 mm or less Close In Weapon System (CIWS), two remote weapon stations (RWS) accommodating heavy machine guns, and dual decoy launchers.

It will continue to be built and upgraded at Osborne, Naval Shipyard in South Australia.
