Semiconductor: Manufacturing process

There are over 300 processes in semiconductor manufacturing.

Each manufacturing process requires special materials and equipment.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hainix are among the world’s highest in manufacturing competitiveness.

However, in the field of materials and equipment (mandatory for 300 manufacturing processes), Japan and the United States hold the world’s best technology.

International Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment and Materials Association (SEMI)

2017 standards: Domestic production rate of semiconductor materials in Korea is analyzed as 50.3%.

Korea Semiconductor Assoc:

“The domestic production rate is 48% for materials and 18% for equipment” analysis.

The 50% domestication rate is the domestication rate of all semiconductors, including low-cost products such as integrated circuits (ICs).

IBK Economic Research Institute: Chan-Weh research member

“The domestication rate of materials and equipment required for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix’s high-spec semiconductors is even lower, depending on Japan and the United States.”

Japan: Basic chemistry and metal smelting technology

Mr. AnnGi Hyun, 기현 기현:

The managing director of the Semiconductor Industry Association explained on the 9th.

The most frequently used semiconductor materials are chemical and metal materials.

Japan leads Korea strongly in basic chemistry and metal smelting technology.

There are many mines in Japan, but not in Korea.

We can not ignore Japan’s semiconductor history, which is longer than Korea.

Semiconductor history in Japan:

Already, Japan monopolized the global memory semiconductor market in the early 1990s and the late 2000s.

Half of the top 10 companies are Japanese companies such as NEC, Toshiba and Hitachi.

Of course, Toshiba is still alive and well.

Samsung Electronics has been at the top just recently in the early 2010s.

It has only been ten years since Korea emerged in the world.
