South Korean marines commission aviation squadron
The Republic of Korea Marine Corps (RoKMC)
has commissioned a new marine utility helicopter squadron equipped with the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI)-built MUH-1 Marineon variant of the KAI Surion.
The commissioning ceremony for the formation, which is known as Marine Helicopter Squadron 1, took place on 29 November at in Pohang.
The squadron,
which was stood up before January 2018, currently operates 10 airframes, but RoKMC sources say that the planned unit complement is 18 helicopters.
Prior to the establishment of the Marine Helicopter Squadron 1,
the RoKMC
operated two small aviation units that were attached to its 1st Division at Pohang, and 2nd Division at Gimpo, close to the border with North Korea.
