Taiwan breaks ground on submarine construction facility

Taiwan’s naval shipbuilder CSBC Corporation broke ground on 9 May on a new facility to build diesel-electric submarines for the Republic of China Navy (ROCN).

The facility – located at CSBC’s base in the southern port of Kaohsiung – will be operational in 2020.

Presiding over the ground-breaking ceremony, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen

said the construction of the facility, which will reportedly cost TWD3.7 billion (USD120 million), is proof of the government’s determination to support the development of the national defence industry and to build submarines to enhance national security.
