NSK: Received an order from VW, electric power steering for EV: to mass production in 2023

NSK:

On March 1, 2021, Volkswagen of Germany announced that NSK had won an order for electric power steering (EPS) for EVs.

Mass production will begin at NSK’s China plant in 2023, and will be supplied to VW’s global bases.

Volkswagen Group Components

In the future, VW will strengthen the development and in-house production of parts for EVs.

Established Volkswagen Group Components in January 2019.
In May 2019, signed a collaboration agreement with NSK for steering development.
VW Group and NSK:

As the first collaboration, we jointly developed a pinion-type EPS for VW’s MEB (Modular Electric Drive Toolkit) (Fig. 1).

Pinion EPS:

Currently, the “EPS installed in the mass-produced VW / MEB” is a pinion type.

This part will be the second generation product.

Other companies supplied parts for the first-generation EPS for VW / MEB.

How pinion EPS works:

Reducer that amplifies the torque of the motor,
Torque sensor that detects steering force,
Rudder angle sensor that detects the rudder angle,
It consists of an ECU (electronic control unit).
