NFAJ Historic Film Portal:
A website dedicated to news and documentary films from the early 20th century opens.
The National Film Archive and National Institute of Informatics launched its website on Friday.
NFAJ Historical Film Portal:
A lineup of his 87 films produced from 1904 to 1937.
Based on a film made around 1904, it also includes 13 minutes of footage.
By “a British videographer who interviewed the Japanese army during the Russo-Japanese War.”
The footage shows
Japanese troops leaving Yokohama, near Tokyo, for Lushun, China — the site of a fierce battle.A 40-minute film produced in 1924
features Emperor Showa’s visit to Ise Shrine and Imperial mausoleums when he was crown prince.
It shows people welcoming him wherever he went.
The National Film Archive of Japan possesses nearly 50,000 cultural and documentary motion picture films produced in Japan.
It plans to upload more to the website, including those dated after World War Two.
The archive’s director, Okajima Hisashi, says the films vividly show how Japanese looked, dressed and worked a century ago.
He says he wants many people to access the website and discover the historic and cultural values of the archived footage.
