Japan nears end of X-2 fighter trials.
Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has confirmed to Jane’s that it is nearing the end of the testing phase of its Mitsubishi X-2 ‘Shinshin’ (Spirit) combat technology demonstrator aircraft as part of a wider project to assess capabilities in support of its programme to replace the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s (JASDF’s) Mitsubishi F-2 fighters.
A spokesperson from ATLA said on 5 December that testing of the X-2 – formerly known as the Advanced Technology Demonstrator, Experimental (ATD-X) – is scheduled to conclude by the end of March 2018.
The spokesperson said that the X-2, which made its maiden flight in April 2016, has to date accumulated 34 test flights, two of which were supervised by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and the remainder by ATLA.
