Shimadzu: Ultrasonic optical flaw detector “MIV-500”: Aircraft inspection

Shimadzu Corporation:

On February 5, Shimadzu Corporation will launch the MIV-500 inspection / ultrasonic inspection equipment for aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.

Ultrasonic optical flaw detector: “MIV-500”

The “MIV-500” captures an image of “propagation of ultrasonic waves”.

By using our unique non-destructive inspection technology (ultrasonic flaw detection), we can visualize and convert “abnormalities near the surface of aircraft bodies and parts, etc.”

The “MIV-500” does not require any painting or paint film removal work, thereby improving the efficiency of inspection work.

For processes that rely on the inspector’s skills such as visual inspection and hammering

“Physical and chemical inspections using the latest technology”
“Digital management of maintenance records”
Propose new value.

“Ultrasonic optical flaw detection” is:

Non-destructive inspection technology using ultrasound and light.

Ultrasonic waves are transmitted to the surface of the object to be inspected, and changes in the surface are detected with a laser illumination / camera.

If there are internal defects such as cracks / peeling / cavities, they will be detected as disturbance of ultrasonic wave propagation.

Traditional method:

Conventional “ultrasonic testing” detects “defects along the depth direction of the target object”.

This time:

Defects can be observed with our proprietary technology, “Ultrasonic optical flaw detection is the same field of view as visual / camera photography.”

In other words, it excels at checking the position and shape of defects.

Aircraft: Current status of maintenance

With the increase in the number of aircraft in recent years, there is a shortage of personnel for operation and maintenance around the world.

“MIV-500” contributes to labor saving and quality improvement for aircraft parts manufacturers and maintenance companies.

Ultrasonic optical flaw detection technology: application fields

Manufacturing and maintenance in the mobility field such as automobiles / ships / railroads are also possible.
