China: The tight supply of pork: 1.13 million pigs killed
June 28, 2019
China: Agricultural and rural areas
In China, the damage of African swine fever has spread throughout the country since the summer of 2018.
Even now, it is still rampant (see article on April 22, 2019).
By June 20, more than 1.13 million pigs were killed.
In May, the number of pig rearing decreased significantly by 22.9% from the previous year.
The average price of pork wholesales soared to 20.63 yuan (about 330 yen) and 29.3% per kilogram.
US imported pork tariff: raised (20% → 45%)
On July 6, 2018, China implemented retaliatory measures against US sanctions against China (the first bullet).
An additional 25% duty is imposed on imported products (pork and other livestock products, agricultural products, automobiles and marine products) native to the United States (approximately $ 34 billion)
As a result, US imported pork tariffs were raised from 20% (12% for frozen) to 45% (37%).
Import trend in 2018: Import value, sharp decline
In the first half of 2018, imports from the United States were fifth, but in the second half of 2018, they dropped sharply to 93.1% compared to the previous year.
Import trend in 2019: Import value, increase
Imports to the US have also started to increase since the turn of the year 2019.
The amount of imports from the US between January and May decreased 34.5% from the previous year, and the rate of decline narrowed from the second half of 2018.
However, the import value for May only has returned to the level before the additional tariff levy (see attached).
Despite high tariffs, China can not but increase imports from the United States.
Import of Canadian meat: temporary import ban
On 26 June, forgery of several certificates was found for import of Canadian meat.
The Chinese government announced temporary import suspension measures (see article on June 27, 2019)
Canada is the third largest import destination for China (from January to May), and the impact of this embargo is significant.
