Thousands protest China health insurance reforms

Protests are erupting in China over cuts to public health insurance.
Multiple cities have significantly cut benefits that pay medical expenses to people’s bank accounts.
Thousands of retired senior citizens and others rallied on Wednesday in central Wuhan, in the inland province of Hubei, to protest the city’s actions.
Hong Kong media say
the city cut the approximately 40-dollar monthly benefit by 70 percent.
Footage obtained by Reuters news agency shows citizens scuffling with police officers.
Many police officers continued
to be deployed in the area on Saturday, and subway entrances remained closed.
Angry citizens
also protested in Dalian in the northeast and Guangzhou in the south.
Wuhan’s health authorities say the insured will benefit from the reforms in the long run, as they will pay less at hospitals.
