OPG

Hitachi-GE wins order for small module reactors
A joint venture of Japanese electronics giant Hitachi and US conglomerate General Electric says
it has won an order to build small reactors.
GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy based in the United States said on Thursday that
it received the order to build reactors called “small module reactors” from an electric power company in Ontario, Canada.
The joint venture says
small modular reactors generate 300,000 kilowatts of electricity, much less than conventional ones that generate about 1 million kilowatts.
It takes a shorter period to build small module reactors and they are easier to cool.
The joint venture
plans to construct up to four small module reactors and aims to complete one of them by 2028 at the earliest.
Hitachi says
this is the first time a Japanese company has been involved in an order for small module reactors.Construction of new nuclear reactors has been put on hold following an accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in 2011, which revealed safety and other problems.
But amid an accelerating global shift toward carbon neutrality,
the United States,
Poland and other countriesare considering introducing small modular reactors that emit no carbon dioxide during operation.
