Japan’s Nidec to build $715m plant in Mexico to tap EV demand

– Nikkei Asia KYOTO –

Japanese motor maker Nidec

is planning to invest an estimated 100 billion yen ($715 million) in the construction of a plant in Mexico
that would produce electric axles, the powertrains of electrical vehicles.

The plan was revealed by Shigenobu Nagamori, Nidec’s chairman and CEO, in a recent interview with Nikkei.

The Kyoto-based company
is currently producing e-axles in China and Europe but will start making them in North America as well ahead of an expected surge in demand.

As our basic operation,
we produce products in a place and sell them locally, Nagamori said,

stressing that Nidec has maintained a policy of local production for local consumption since its founding.

The Nidec group,
which already makes motors for conventional vehicles in Mexico,

is expected to start the construction of the e-axle factory during or after the next business year.

Several years ago,
Nagamori began professing that 2025 will be a “dividing ridge” for the widespread use of EVs.

In 2019,
Nidec became the first company to shift to mass production of e-axles.

The e-axle is an integrated motor, decelerator and inverter system that is the heart of EVs and equivalent to the engine of gasoline-powered vehicles.

Nidec’s advanced technology — accumulated through the production of motors for personal computers and other products —

allows it to reduce the weight and size of motors.

In addition,
Nidec’s e-axle production is integrated with the making of inverters and decelerators by group companies,

which also produce machine tools used in the production of decelerators.

Five of the seven locations are in China, and the other two are in Europe.

In China,
Nidec-made e-axles go into EVs produced by Guangzhou Automobile Group and into high-end Zeekr EVs made by Geely Automobile.

In France,
a plant Nidec runs jointly with Stellantis began operating earlier this year.

Nidec also jointly runs a plant with the Guangzhou Automobile Group.

EV sales in China and Europe combined

are forecast to account for 80% of all global sales in 2025, according to Bloomberg NEF.

U.S. sales are expected to account for 15% of the global total.

Because the U.S. is rapidly shifting to EVs, Tesla started operating a new plant in Texas this year,

while General Motors plans to raise the ratio of EVs to all new car sales to 50% by 2030.

In addition, Stellantis has announced a plan to build a battery plant in the state of Indiana.

But competition for e-axle market share is intensifying.

Aisin
has developed a family of second-generation e-axles and plans to release them for compact and other EVs in 2025.

Hitachi Astemo
has won an order to supply e-axles for Honda Motor EVs that the automaker plans to begin marketing globally in 2026.

Outside Japan,
Robert Bosch of Germany and Magna International of Canada are stepping up their e-axle businesses.
